Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman Abraham Roman, was the 3rd daughter of their family. Her father's death as a Carnival barker at the age of a young girl, she had to help keep the family going by working as a maid and server. Ruth was a student at the school located in the tenement district of Boston's most deprived. She only attended the school for two years, before leaving to pursue her acting profession. This was not an easy path to pursue. Even though she got an interview at a theatre in New York posing as a still for a mystery magazine however, there were no theatre opportunities that were offered to her. After that, she was an hat-checker at an evening club, before deciding to call the shots and moving back to Boston. She worked as an usherette during the day and then performed at the New England Repertory Company by evening, her first ever permanent acting job. She graduated with a degree in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
